Bata is the economic capital of Equatorial Guinea and seat of the national parliament. Bata is also the capital of the mainland region, the largest part of the country called Rio Muni, and the largest and most populous city in Equatorial Guinea, ahead of Malabo, capital of the country and of the province of Bioko Norte (located on Bioko Island). The historic city of Bata also serves as the capital of the Littoral Province.

Bata has hot summers; rainfall is long and hot. It is oppressive, wet, and cloudy throughout the year.
